Our Story

Elliott White
Springs

Elliott White Springs, son of Colonel Leroy Springs, discovered his love for flying at 16 and went on to become one of America’s most decorated World War I pilots. Serving with the British Royal Flying Corps and later the U.S. Army, he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Distinguished Service Cross, and became the fifth-ranking American ace of the war. Springs later served as a lieutenant colonel in World War II, solidifying his reputation as a fearless aviator and leader.

Our Story

Transforming Textiles
& Revolutionizing Advertising

After the war, Springs turned to writing before taking over Springs Cotton Mills at age 35, transforming it into a textile powerhouse. He expanded production and revolutionized marketing with the daring “Springmaid girl” campaign, which paired pin-up imagery with witty copy. The bold ads boosted sales and reshaped the direction of American advertising, making “sex sells” a defining strategy for decades to come.

Our Story

A Legacy
Of Leadership

Springs married Frances Hubbard Ley in 1922, and together they raised two children before tragedy struck with the loss of their son in 1946. By the time of Elliott’s passing in 1959, he had grown Springs Cotton Mills from $13 million to $138.5 million in value, increasing sales nineteen-fold and tripling the workforce. Under his leadership, the company became the most profitable textile manufacturer in the nation, a legacy that endured for generations.

Our Story

A Legacy of
Community & Recreation

Beyond business, Springs invested heavily in the lives of his employees and neighbors, funding health, education, and recreational programs. He created parks, golf courses, and Springmaid Beach in Myrtle Beach, ensuring workers had access to vibrant community spaces. In 1938, he founded Leroy Springs & Company, which continues today with the Anne Springs Close Greenway, golf courses, and Springmaid Mountain, preserving his commitment to recreation and community well-being for future generations.
